Clearing common misconceptions about your mouth

1. Oral health just affects your mouth, it doesn't effect your overall health

Your mouth is the entry way to your body. Therefore, infections and colonization of harmful microorganisms in the oral regions can lead to various systemic problems. It is important to maintain a good oral health to limit the risk of multiple system diseases.

2. Brushing hard makes your teeth cleaner

Using a stiff or hard bristle toothbrush or brushing hard,  breaks down the enamel and receeds the gums. This leads to sensivity overtimes as the dentin and roots becomes exposed. At our Worcester, MA dental office we would advise you to brush your teeth with soft bristle tooth brush and gentle pressure.

3. Flossing isn't necessary

Flossing is essential when removing excess food pieces and plaque between the teeth where your brush can not reach. This helps prevents cavities, gum disease, and mouth odor.

4. Brushing your teeth right before your dental appointment reduces cavities

If you already have cavities, brushing your teeth before your appointment wouldn't get rid of it. Oral cavities are hole made in teeth by bad bacteria. So brushing won't fix the problem. Visit your dentist for proper treatments.

5. Only sugar causes tooth damage

Although sugar is a common cause of tooth decay, there are other things that can ruin the teeth. Acidic and hard foods/ drinks, poor oral conditions, some medications can also cause damage to the teeth and gums.
